A Cork-based Journalist with a disposition for all things tech.
I am currently completing a Masters in Journalism & New Media at the Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland, having completed an MA in Applied Psychology at University College Cork, to date – working as an assistant psychologist with Enable Ireland.
Having spent over a decade in the disability sector, I felt compelled to pursue other professional goals of mine, toward a career in a field of which I’ve always had a passionate interest and one where my training in psychology might serve me well – Media & Communications.
My work alongside individuals with varying intellectual and physical disabilities allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding and appreciation for the individual ‘experience‘, specifically, determinants of ‘quality of life’ (QoL) and individual well-being.
My time in Enable Ireland and other front-line disability services allowed me to see the wealth of different assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative technologies that are utilized by individual stake-holders to great effect.
From assistive technology capability switches, to eye-tracking mouse systems , I quickly began to see how technology could be used as a tool for liberation and autonomy.
Although I saw great value in working with stake-holders directly, my academic experience of conducting reliable, valid research has always satisfied my tendency to investigate, learn and apply.
